Kill Your Darlings Issue 1

Kill Your Darlings is a great new literary journal coming out of Melbourne and named after a William Faulkner quote. It has fiction, commentary, essays, reviews, and just about anything else you could want in a book about books and book related things. Listed below are the stand outs from their virgin issue.

Patrick Cullen - Carver's Unkempt Lawn
1. Wolff stood grinning, his moustache stretched across the width of his face, and then some.

Kalinda Ashton - Finding Out
1. Women have soft bodies; their cruelty is a kind I recognise.
Dmetri Kakmi - The Pond
1. In the service of all is the road, meandering, snake-like, unable to settle on a single direction, until uncertainty - or perhaps it is certainty, after all - triumphs at the juncture of the olive grove and the road branches in opposite directions.

2. Its sinew breaks into fingers that unfurl and twist, coiling in the air, before bowing violently down, to balance on knuckled toes, almost breaking the spine...

Chris Womersley - Theories of Relativity
1. Our father is tall, angular and taciturn...

2. Our mother took up smoking, for a start, and became dry-witted and elegant.
